11/23/2009: I was scared at first but after a few weeks I didn't want to go back home. I attended Warm Springs Rehabilitation Unit in Gonzales, Texas and LOVED it! They had me dressing myself in a matter of weeks. In about a month I could transfer myself into my own wheelchair and then I could take little naps after lunch without help. The staff was outstanding and if they received complaints they quickly fired the ones who did not conform with their standards. They asked me what my goals were and all I could think of was I wanted to live independently. This was my goal and that's what they did, made me independent. I'm sure they can't do this for everyone but on occasion they offer an extended stay after the funds have been depleted and they did that for me. TRC (The old Texas Rehabilitation Commission before they changed to DARS now) paid for one month's rehab and that was not enough for me so Warm Springs gave me a free month's rehab. They are the BEST in my opinion. Don't be afraid, look forward to it. Just ask me and I'll be happy to share my experiences.
